p7122
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a brand new Bizen yohen sake cup, freshly taken from the kiln by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense while having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in October 2023.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through daring kiln firings that fear no risk, this piece represents an exceptional firing that leans heavily into the "firing" aspect over the "clay" aspect.

The thoroughly fired ash-covered yohen features a magnificent landscape that evokes the flames swirling within the kiln, with some areas showing a rich, lustrous sea-slug skin (namako-hada) glaze, and others showing a dull, metallic ash-covered finish.

While the hard, thoroughly fired clay body peeks through in the clear areas on the front, the deep shiso-colored clay remains rich and dense in the shadowed areas, creating an intriguing, paradoxical expression where the intense firing actually serves to accentuate the quality of the clay.

Furthermore, the intense firing has layered gold hues over the shadowed areas, imbuing the piece with the unique charm of Bizen pottery—a work that, despite its heavy "firing," remains deeply rooted in the essence of clay.

A faint, sweet scarlet hue appears as if hidden on only a tiny portion of the foot, a fascinating remnant of the scarlet that seemed to have been fired away, preserved only by the serendipity of the kiln's flames.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before the item can be shipped).
Diameter 7.3cm x 7.1cm x Height 4.4cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

He built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 to become independent, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the first time for the Chanoyu Zokei Exhibition.
