p7164
Bizen sake cup
This is a new Bizen sake cup, fresh from the kiln of Tomoyuki Oiwa, who studied ceramic techniques under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and now works in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture.
This latest piece was fired in November 2023.

Mr. Oiwa aims for intense firing in his process, and this piece, despite being fired in an anagama kiln, is a masterpiece featuring ash-covered yohen (kiln-transmutation) effects.

The ash-covered yohen from the anagama kiln gives the piece a generally bright appearance; in particular, the vibrant orange yohen on the front contrasts beautifully with the deep reddish clay, creating a stunning visual effect.

Furthermore, the colors are sharply divided between the top and bottom, as if drawn with a ruler, and the contrast between the red and black is reminiscent of the red carbonized works of his mentor, Ryuichi Kakurezaki.

The bold form, which makes extensive use of spatula-carved fluting (shinogi), creates fine ridges and grooves in the clay surface, while the adhesion of fine-grained 'tobigoma' (flying sesame-seed ash) adds great depth to the texture.

The design, which incorporates and reinterprets his mentor's tripod style, is fascinating, with Mr. Oiwa's meticulous attention to detail evident from the foot all the way to the rim.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (please note that shipment will take some time).
Diameter 7.1cm × 7.1cm × Height 6.5cm

Tomoyuki Oiwa was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1977.

He completed his studies at the Bizen Pottery Center in 2004 and began his apprenticeship under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in 2005.

In 2014, he established his own studio in Hyogo Prefecture.
