p7173
Glass of dark beer
This is a brand new black beer cup, freshly taken from the kiln by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who studied pottery under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and now pursues his craft in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture.

This is his latest work, fired in November 2023.

Mr. Oiwa aims for intense firing in his process. The high heat causes the black slip to transform into a magnificent hue, achieving a lustrous, clear black color similar to that of his mentor, Mr. Kakurezaki.

Furthermore, this piece goes beyond that, exhibiting a vivid, eye-catching light blue kiln transformation. The remarkably clear color creates a scenic effect that resembles pulled black glaze, which is truly extraordinary.

The lower side features a white-gray "sangiri" (ash-smothered) effect, which is striking and resembles exposed concrete.

In terms of form, he thoroughly pursues the beauty of the piece as a three-dimensional object. The design, resembling a pestle with a constricted waist, creates an exquisite sense of balance, while the wide-cut foot is reminiscent of his mentor, Ryuichi Kakurezaki.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before it can be shipped.)
Diameter 7.7cm x 7.5cm x Height 12.4cm

Tomoyuki Oiwa was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1977.

He completed the Bizen Pottery Center program in 2004 and began his apprenticeship under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in 2005.

He established his own studio in Hyogo Prefecture in 2014.
