p7188
Bizen sake cup
This is a freshly fired Bizen sake cup by Tamon Kaneshige, who continues to hone his craft on the rigorous path of pottery, following in the footsteps of his father, the late Susumu Kaneshige.

This latest work was removed from the kiln in November 2023.

Created at the Maruyama Kiln, where many masterpieces have been born, it features a deeply flavorful appearance coated in black-silver ash.

The piece is captivating for its kiln-fired transformation, which was pushed to the absolute limit and is reminiscent of the kiln-altered works of Susumu Kaneshige; the entire surface is covered in a black-silver ash glaze.

The "nuke" (clear patch) on the front has the appearance of clay just on the verge of being fired through, and the very subtle remaining orange clay tone adds a wonderful depth of character.

Its simple, easy-to-use design, free of artifice, is another charm—a sake cup that is as pleasing to hold as it is to behold, reflecting the sensibilities of Tamon-sensei, who himself is a lover of Japanese sake.

Signed wooden box (double-crosspiece lid)
Diameter 6.4cm × 6.3cm × Height 6.9cm

Tamon Kaneshige was born in Okayama City in 1977.

He graduated from the Faculty of Business and Commerce at Keio University in 2000.

In 2004, he entered the path of pottery under his father, Susumu Kaneshige.

He held his first solo exhibition at Okayama Tenmaya in 2011.

He currently remains highly active, focusing primarily on solo exhibitions at department stores.
