p7207
Bizen Hidasuki Beer Mug
This is an earlier work of Hidasuki beer mug by Susumu Kaneshige, who succeeded to the Maruyama kiln as the eldest son of Sozan Kaneshige and captivates many people with the harmony of delicate, elegant clay texture and powerful form.
This earlier beer mug features a design closer to those crafted by Sozan Kaneshige than the current designs, which have a tapered, rhombic rim.

It was created in accordance with the philosophy of the essence of Kaneshige Bizen, which is to avoid excessive decoration and bring out the natural quality of the clay. It is composed of only the minimum necessary decoration, showcasing a simple yet impressive silhouette.

It is made with the relatively coarse, sandy clay that Susumu often uses for tableware, and the clean, refined mogusa clay is decorated with vibrant hidasuki, a technique passed down directly from Sozan.

With fine stones and tiny black specks from components within the clay, the texture produced by the special Maruyama electric kiln possesses a distinct charm and elegance.

The base was cut out and then further refined with a spatula into a go-bowl base (goke-zoko), vividly bringing to mind the image of the clay being powerfully carved away.

Although this is an earlier work, there are no stains or signs of use.

No box included (*a paulownia wood box can be made separately)
Diameter 7.5cm × 7.2cm × Height 10.4cm

Susumu Kaneshige was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1945 as the eldest son of Sozan Kaneshige.

After graduating from the Faculty of Agriculture at Kyoto University in 1969, he entered the path of ceramics under his father, Sozan Kaneshige.

Later, in 1979, he established his own independent kiln in the current Maruyama area of Okayama City.

He primarily creates tea ceremony ceramics using a potter's wheel, characterized by deep and powerful firing.

He is committed to stripping away decoration as much as possible and projecting his own soul directly into the clay.

He is currently active mainly through solo exhibitions.

He holds energetic annual solo exhibitions at department stores in Okayama, Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, and Kumamoto.

He also held a solo exhibition in Munich, Germany, in 1995.

In 1997, he exhibited at the Bizen Ware Paris Exhibition.

He received the Okayama Prefectural Cultural Award in 2019.
