p7211
Shino teacup
This Shino yunomi (tea cup) is the work of Takashi Baba, who was born in Imbe and has loved Bizen ware since childhood, finding his life's joy in creating art and firing kilns.
This piece was taken from the kiln around April 2023; it is a unique creation made by applying Shino glaze to Bizen clay and firing it in a Bizen wood-fired climbing kiln.

While the base follows the traditions of Shino ware, the overlapping effects of the climbing kiln firing result in a new series that offers an infinite range of variations.

Typically, the madder red color characteristic of Shino ware is achieved using red iron oxide (bengara). However, this unconventional piece achieves that same hue without any red iron oxide by varying the thickness of the feldspar glaze to allow the brownish color of the Bizen clay to shine through.

Natural ash glaze from the climbing kiln has layered over the feldspar glaze like a glass coating. The combination of the clean white glaze with the faint green of the natural ash creates a new type of white—neither Shino nor white porcelain—that possesses a unique, hard-textured, and multifaceted quality.

The interior of the cup also features a complex layering of white feldspar glaze and the crimson of the Bizen clay, creating a landscape that rivals the finest authentic Shino ware.

No box (※A paulownia box can be crafted separately)
Diameter 8.3cm × 8.2cm × Height 7.8cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ware artist Shosuke Baba.

Having decided to become a potter from a young age, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden his perspective on ceramic art.

In 2006, he graduated from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo University of the Arts and honed his skills at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

He is currently active, primarily holding solo exhibitions at department stores.
