p7212
Black Glazed Sake Cup
This is a black-glazed sake cup (guinomi) by Hiroshi Goseki, who trained under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki before opening his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture.
This is one of Goseki-sensei's original black works, created by blending clay from Bizen and Hiyama, applying a custom-blended black glaze, and firing it in his Hiyama kiln.

Possessing a character that only an artist who has mastered the black glaze of the Isezaki school could achieve, the piece features a light dusting of natural ash glaze from the firing process over the black glaze, resulting in a complex, deep, and multi-layered black finish.

The piece was initially formed using the tatara slab-building technique and then meticulously refined by hand, creating a superb form that conveys the same tranquility and gentle fluidity as a Raku tea bowl.

On the interior, the way the natural ash glaze slowly cascades down toward the base creates a landscape of its own; the mysterious movement of the natural glaze paired with the matte black texture makes for a truly sophisticated appearance when filled with sake.

The linear pattern on the front was incised with a spatula; these are not cracks.

The glaze has flowed down to the foot, making it slightly unstable, but it becomes steady once filled with sake.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san included).
Diameter 7.1cm x 7.0cm x Height 6.3cm

Hiroshi Goseki was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.

After graduating from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2013, he studied under Jun Isezaki, a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property for Bizen ware.

He became independent in 2017 and built his kiln in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 2019.
