p7222
Teacup
This is a yunomi (tea cup) by the late Seishi Mori, who named his kiln "Shakuyo" (Scorching Sun) as an antithesis to consumer society, creating his works as if pouring prayers into the clay.
True to the name "Shakuyo," it features a deep, intense scarlet color that reflects the artist’s dedication to capturing the burning intensity of life, as if the glowing embers of the kiln have yet to cool.

The secret lies in the hidasuki (fire-cord) technique and high-temperature, long-duration firing; the vaporized straw elements coat the entire piece, creating the rich, oil-paint-like scarlet texture characteristic of Seishi’s work.

The form is also uniquely recognizable as Seishi’s; while one might initially mistake the pattern for regular lines resembling bamboo nodes, the random, diagonally stretching lines evoke a sense of controlled chaos.

In a modern society where ideals and philosophies are consumed as mere symbols in an instant, this is an energetic tea cup into which the artist poured all his prayers, wishes, and rage into the clay.

Original signed wooden box (with two-sided batten)
Diameter 7.8cm × 7.6cm × Height 9.0cm

Seishi Mori was born in 1944 into the Mori family, one of the six traditional Bizen-yaki pottery families.

After graduating from university, he entered the world of pottery in 1969, studying under his father, Chikuzan Mori, and his brother, Tozan Mori.

In 1975, he built a semi-underground anagama kiln and became independent, subsequently holding solo exhibitions across Japan.

He passed away in 2011.
