p7225
Kuroshuten
Born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki,
Koichiro Isezaki is a potter breathing new life into the world of Bizen ware with his rare sense of style and masterful sculpting ability. This is a newly fired black sake cup (guinomi) fresh from his kiln.

This latest work was just fired in February 2024.

While utilizing the inherent qualities of Bizen clay, he skillfully incorporates the essence of his roots, such as wood carving, to create a unique piece that is unmistakably his own.

The piece is created by tearing two large clay spheres in half and joining them together before forming the sphere, resulting in ridges and fine wrinkles on the surface of the vessel.

The black slip—now synonymous with the Isezaki school—reacts with intense firing to create kiln transformations, with parts turning blue, as if the indigo color were being extracted from the black surface.

The wrinkles and ridges created by this work's unique, rock-like form bring further variations to the thickness and flow of the natural glaze and black slip, resulting in a complex landscape where the colors change dramatically.

Signed box to be provided later (Please note that it will take some time before shipping.)
Diameter 8.0cm x 7.8cm x Height 5.5cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture in 1974 as the eldest son of Jun Isezaki.

After graduating from the sculpture department of Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States.

Later, in 1998, he apprenticed under Jeff Shapiro, a potter living in New York City and a student of his father.

After studying ceramics for about two years, he returned to Japan and became an independent potter under his father, Jun Isezaki, in 2000.
