p7226
Bizen yohen sake cup
Born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki,
Koichiro Isezaki is breathing new life into the world of Bizen ware with his exceptional sense and masterful sculpting skills. This is a newly fired Bizen yohen sake cup fresh from his kiln.

This latest work was just taken from the kiln in February 2024.

While utilizing the natural characteristics of Bizen clay,
he skillfully incorporates elements from his roots, such as wood carving,
to create unique pieces that are instantly recognizable as Koichiro's work.

The variations in color are more vivid than those from a climbing kiln,
centered on the unique yohen (kiln changes) of an anagama kiln, where yellow sesame glaze and ash-covered yohen blend together, interspersed with a multitude of colors such as greyish namako-hada (sea cucumber skin) and metallic hues.

The "nuke" (uncovered areas) react to subtle differences in temperature, revealing approximately three distinct clay tones: a well-fired deep grey, a rich shiso (perilla) color typical of Bizen ware, and a light beige, allowing one to enjoy the colorful variety characteristic of an anagama kiln.

The piece was hand-formed rather than wheel-thrown,
and its meticulously detailed design radiates a dense presence akin to a tea bowl.

Signed wooden box to be provided later (Please note that it will take some time before shipping.)
Diameter 7.8cm × 7.4cm × Height 6.0cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture in 1974, as the eldest son of Jun Isezaki.

After graduating from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States.

In 1998, he apprenticed under Jeff Shapiro, a potter living in New York City who was also a student of his father.

After studying pottery for about two years, he returned to Japan, and in 2000, he became an independent potter working under his father, Jun Isezaki.
