p7234
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a newly fired Bizen sake cup by Makoto Nakamura, renowned for his sake and tableware, and the eldest son of the late master Rokuro Nakamura, a pride of Bizen pottery.

Fresh out of the kiln as of February 2024, this latest piece departs from the classic scarlet hue synonymous with the Nakamura family. Instead, it features a compelling kiln-altered effect achieved by firing the clay to its absolute limit.

Thoroughly fired while buried in embers at the back of the kiln, this impressive work has been carbonized to a shimmering black-silver through ash-covered kiln alteration.

The "nuke" (uncovered area) on the front has fired into a pale orange that goes beyond standard scarlet, offering an aesthetic nuance reminiscent of the Kaneshige family, distinct from the usual Nakamura style.

However, the interior retains a quintessential scarlet hue; when sake is poured in, it creates a fascinating landscape that looks like glowing embers.

The clearly defined kiln-induced markings and the captivating ash-covered surface that almost prickles the palm make this piece truly charming. The intense firing results, which are rarely produced even within a single kiln load, are a delight to behold and provide excellent company for a drink.

With each kiln firing, Makoto-sensei's works have become more compact, as if gathering energy; this piece remains small and elegant while capturing the essence of Nakamura Bizen.

Signed wooden box to be provided at a later date (please note that shipment will take some time).
Diameter 8.1cm x 8.1cm x Height 3.5cm

Makoto Nakamura was born in 1949 in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, as the eldest son of Rokuro Nakamura.

Starting in 1971, he learned the foundations of Bizen ware under his father, honing his skills from clay preparation to pottery techniques.

Furthermore, he spent 10 years assisting Michiaki Kaneshige with kiln firings, learning the craft directly from him and gaining influence from the teachings of Toyo Kaneshige.

He established his own studio in 1975.

Currently, he produces a wide range of works, primarily sake vessels, as well as vases and tableware.

He actively holds solo exhibitions across Japan, including in Tokyo, Okayama, and Nagoya, and has also held joint exhibitions with his son, Kazuki Nakamura.
