p7242
Tea cup
This is a tea cup by the late Seishi Mori, who named his kiln "Shakuyo" (Burning Sun) and created his work as an antithesis to consumer society, as if infusing his prayers into the clay.
True to the name "Shakuyo," this piece is characteristic of Mori’s style—he poured his heart and soul into capturing a scarlet hue that burns with the intensity of life, resulting in a rich, deep red that makes it seem as though the glowing flames of the kiln have yet to cool.

The secret lies in his *hidasuki* (fire-cord) technique and high-temperature, long-duration firing; the vaporized straw components coat the entire surface, creating the thick, oil-painting-like scarlet luster unique to Mori’s work.

The form is also distinctively his, recognizable at a glance; while it may at first appear to be a regular pattern of lines mimicking bamboo joints, random lines stretching diagonally create a sense of chaos.

In a modern society where ideals and philosophies are consumed in an instant as mere symbols, this is an energetic tea cup that embodies every prayer, wish, and bit of rage infused into the clay.

Includes signed wooden box (with two-sided slats).
Diameter 8.0cm x 7.9cm x Height 9.3cm

Seishi Mori was born in 1944 into the Mori family, one of the six prestigious Bizen-yaki kiln lineages.

After graduating from university, he entered the world of pottery in 1969, studying under his father, Chikuzan Mori, and his older brother, Tozan Mori.

In 1975, he built a semi-underground anagama kiln and became independent, subsequently holding solo exhibitions throughout Japan.

He passed away in 2011.
