p7262
Kuro-Shuten
This is a black sake cup by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who studied pottery techniques under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and now pursues his research in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture.

This piece was removed from the kiln in November 2023.

Oiwa-sensei fires his works with the intent of achieving an intense level of firing; the high heat transforms the black slip into a magnificent hue, resulting in the same lustrous, clear black characteristic of his mentor, Kakurezaki-sensei.

Furthermore, this piece features not only that color but also a vivid, striking light-blue kiln transformation; the remarkably clear, scenic aesthetic is reminiscent of *hikidashi-guro* (pulled-out black ware), creating a truly mysterious effect.

The bold form, which makes heavy use of *shinogi* (fluting), creates fine ridges and grooves in the clay surface, and the translucent, light-blue kiln transformation gains delicate shading from these textural variations.

The form, created by hollowing out a block of clay to resemble Ayers Rock, is intriguing, and Oiwa-sensei's meticulous attention to detail is evident from the foot to the rim.

Original signed box to follow (we kindly ask for your patience as it will take some time to ship).
Diameter 8.1cm × 7.1cm × Height 6.4cm

Tomoyuki Oiwa was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1977.

He completed his studies at the Bizen Pottery Center in 2004 and began his apprenticeship under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in 2005.

He established his own studio in Hyogo Prefecture in 2014.
