p7267
White-makeup Shuten-dōji
This is a white-slip sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
Inheriting the legacy of Sozan, who excelled not only in Bizen ware but also in glazed ceramics such as Shino and Karatsu, Koriki crafts authentic white-slip works using clay from the Bizen region.

While the white slip itself provides a remarkably clean and pristine aesthetic, the rim and the front are accented with delicate ash-glaze brushwork, lending the piece a unique atmosphere.

The interior of the cup features ochre-colored spots, likely from natural glaze, which provide a compelling accent against the pure white glaze.

Small pebbles from the clay body peek out from beneath the glaze in places, giving the piece a rich, nuanced texture that prevents it from feeling overly clinical despite its pure white finish.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 8.1cm x 8.1cm x Height 5.5cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he spent seven years from 1989 studying ceramics under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen, and became independent, firing his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition for the first time.
