p7291
Bizen tea bowl
This Bizen tea bowl is an earlier work by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretension, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

Created approximately ten years ago, this piece has been provided with a new paulownia wood box by our gallery.

It was crafted using a clay mixture with a higher content of mountain soil than his usual works, aiming for a weathered aesthetic devoid of affectation, much like that of traditional *yamachawan* (mountain tea bowls).

Regarding the firing, he avoided the kinds of kiln effects intended to impress viewers, instead opting for a natural finish; the brownish-red clay reminiscent of Nanban ware transitions into a rich *shiso* (perilla-leaf) color.

Small stones naturally present in the mountain soil have emerged from the surface during the firing process, adding a delicate, withered character to the unadorned, Nanban-style texture.

The unique appeal of this stubborn, difficult-to-work mountain soil is fully expressed here, imbuing the simple form with a subtle, organic sway that cannot be achieved by mere dexterity of the fingers alone.

The vibrant green of matcha will look truly striking against this coarse, astringent surface, and the bowl is a wonderful piece that will develop an increasingly smooth texture with continued use.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 15.2cm × 14.7cm × Height 6.6cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

He established his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, in 1996 and held his first firing the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has continued to hold annual solo exhibitions since.

In 2002, he was selected for the first time for the Chanoyu Zokei-ten (Tea Ceramics Exhibition).
