p7332
Bizen sake cup
This is a newly fired Bizen sake cup by Takashi Soga, who challenges the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which ancient Bizen ware was fired.

This piece was removed from the kiln in May 2024.

To reproduce the firing style of the ancient Bizen period, the artist did not use firebricks, which did not exist at the time, but instead fired the piece in an earth-only kiln where modern firing conventions do not apply.

The earth-only kiln acts as a single, massive piece of pottery itself, and as a result, it produces a superlative texture that transcends modern aesthetics to approach that of ancient Bizen.

For this firing, the artist undertook an unprecedented 19-day challenge, and the piece is adorned with a stunning kiln transformation (yohen) born from a fervent desire to bring the beauty of ancient Bizen back to the world.

It features a unique, highly lustrous brown clay surface reminiscent of the Ibe-te style from the early Edo period, which, combined with the mustard-colored sesame glaze (goma) that rained down from above, creates a truly deep and flavorful scenery.

The interior, like the exterior, features a rich, brownish surface in the Ibe-te style, with the subtle wheel marks left within the simple design providing an excellent accent.

Signed wooden box to follow (usually delivered in approximately 2–3 weeks, though this may change significantly depending on Mr. Soga's health).
Diameter 6.7cm x 5.8cm x Height 5.2cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built an earth-only kiln without the use of firebricks in Kuguï, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his career as a ceramic artist in 2013.
