p7336
Bizen ware free cup
This is a newly fired Bizen free cup by Takashi Soga, an artist who challenges the beauty of the ancient world by recreating the environment in which old Bizen ware was fired.

This piece was removed from the kiln in May 2024.

To replicate the kiln-firing style of the old Bizen era, the artist avoids using modern firebricks that did not exist at the time, firing the piece in a kiln made entirely of earth, where modern firing conventions do not apply.

The kiln itself becomes a single, massive piece of pottery, resulting in an exquisite earthen quality that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches that of old Bizen.

For this firing, the artist undertook an unprecedented 19-day kiln session, producing a rich, reddish-rust earthen hue characteristic of old Bizen, along with Soga's signature, extremely fine-textured kase-goma (dry ash glaze).

The fine-textured kase-goma, which covers about 70% of the piece, has a remarkably rounded feel—so much so that it is hard to believe it is Bizen ware—creating a magnificent yohen (kiln transmutation) that makes you want to keep rolling it in your palm.

The base of this piece features a mysterious reddish-rust earthen quality, complemented by black spots from the eruption of iron and other elements within the clay, resulting in a cold, weathered texture in the style of old Bizen that could only be achieved through an all-earth kiln.

No box
Diameter 7.5cm x 7.4cm x Height 9.5cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He studied under Jun Isezaki in 2009, and in 2012, he built an all-earth kiln without the use of firebricks in Kugu-i, Bizen City.

He became independent and began his pottery career in 2013.
