p7339
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a newly fired Bizen sake cup by Takashi Soga, who challenges the aesthetics of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which Old Bizen pottery was fired.

This piece was fired in May 2024.

To replicate the firing techniques of the Old Bizen era, the piece was fired in an all-earthen kiln—one that defies modern firing conventions and uses no firebricks, which did not exist at the time.

The earthen kiln itself acts as one massive piece of pottery, resulting in an exquisite earthen texture that transcends modern aesthetics and approaches that of Old Bizen.

For this firing, Soga challenged himself to an unprecedented 19-day duration, producing his signature exceptionally fine "kase-goma" (dry ash glaze).

The fine-textured kase-goma, covering approximately 70% of the piece, gives it a rounded tactile quality that is almost unbelievable for Bizen ware in the best possible sense—a magnificent kiln transformation that makes you want to roll it in your palm forever.

It features a vivid scarlet "amayaki" (lightly fired) earthen tone, which is rare for Soga. One cannot help but be amazed at this earthen kiln firing, which retained such fresh, raw clay qualities despite the long duration that caused significant fusion throughout the piece.

Signed wooden box (shohosan)
Diameter 6.2cm x 6.1cm x Height 5.4cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

In 2009, he began studying under Jun Isezaki, and in 2012, he built an all-earthen kiln that uses no firebricks in Kuguï, Bizen City.

He became independent in 2013 and began his pottery career.
