p7342
Bizen ware free cup
This new Bizen free cup, freshly taken from the kiln by Takashi Soga, represents a challenge to reach the beauty of antiquity by recreating the same environment in which Old Bizen was fired.

This piece was fired in May 2024.

To reproduce the kiln-firing style of the Old Bizen era, the work was fired in an all-earthen kiln that does not use firebricks, which did not exist at the time, and where modern kiln-firing common sense does not apply.

The all-earthen kiln acts as a single, massive piece of pottery in itself, and as a result, it exhibits an exquisite earthen quality that transcends modern beauty and approaches that of Old Bizen.

For this firing, Soga took on the challenge of an unprecedentedly long 19-day kiln session, bringing out a rich, rusty-red earthen tone characteristic of Old Bizen, along with his signature, extremely fine matte-ash glaze (kase-goma).

The fine-textured matte-ash glaze, which covers about 70% of the piece, gives it a softness that makes it hard to believe it is Bizen ware in the best sense of the word, resulting in a magnificent kiln transformation that makes you want to roll it in your palm forever.

The base of this piece features a mysterious rusty-red earthen tone, combined with black spots caused by the eruption of iron and other minerals within the clay and a soft skin texture—a weathered, refined finish that reaches an Old Bizen style only possible through an earthen kiln.

No box
Diameter 7.3cm x 7.3cm x Height 9.3cm

Takashi Soga was born in Tokyo in 1984.

He apprenticed under Jun Isezaki in 2009 and built his own all-earthen kiln without firebricks in Kuguigawa, Bizen City, in 2012.

He became independent and began his pottery career in 2013.
