p7348
Pale-turned-Black Shuten-doji
This is a new *Sohen-kuro* (blue-transformed black) sake cup (guinomi) that has just been taken from the kiln by Yuji Goseki, who trained under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki before opening his own kiln in Ibaraki Prefecture.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in June 2024.

The piece uses a black clay that is instantly recognizable as being from the Isezaki school, and has been titled "Sohen-kuro" because the areas where natural ash glaze has accumulated turn a cobalt blue.

Rich, cobalt-blue kiln transformations—fitting for the name "Sohen"—appear over a calm, yellowish-sesame glaze with subtle green undertones.

For this piece, the artist used slab construction to build up the form before finishing and refining it by hand, resulting in a superb shape that evokes the tranquility and gentle undulations of a Raku tea bowl.

Unlike the exterior, the interior black is a deep, refined color reminiscent of polished ink, creating a mesmerizing vessel interior that perfectly complements the serene style of the work.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time to ship).
Diameter 7.5cm × 7.3cm × Height 7.8cm

Yuji Goseki was born in Chiba Prefecture in 1988.

After graduating from Tohoku University of Art and Design in 2013, he studied under Jun Isezaki, a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property for Bizen ware.

He became independent in 2017 and built his own kiln in Hiyama, Hitachiomiya City, Ibaraki Prefecture, in 2019.
