p7366
Bizen-ware "tasuki" (cord-pattern) red sake cup
These new Bizen sake cups, just out of the kiln, were created by Yoshiteru Kouriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense, even while having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This piece was fired in June of Reiwa 6 (2024).

Distinct from traditional Bizen techniques achieved through climbing kiln firing, this sake cup was fired using a new method developed by Kouriki-sensei.

It represents an evolution of the *hidasuki* (fire-cord) technique—created by firing pieces in a sealed environment within the kiln—and is imbued with the vivid, ripe-persimmon red color that has become a hallmark of Kouriki-sensei’s work.

True to the name *kuro-tasuki* (black fire-cord), this piece features a matte black cord pattern. Upon closer inspection, however, the black cord reveals a mysterious *yohen* (kiln transformation) effect, appearing in some parts as a dry, crusty ash (*kase-goma*) texture and in others as glassy crystals.

It is a piece that fulfills the dream many pottery enthusiasts have upon seeing such transformative works: the desire to drink sake from a cup that is entirely a product of the kiln’s magic. It is truly a *hidasuki* piece intended for the "connoisseur" (*gen-to*) who has seen it all.
Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time for dispatch).
Diameter 7.1cm x 7.0cm x Height 5.6cm
Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and held his first firing the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has continued to hold annual solo exhibitions since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Chanoyu Zokeiten (Tea Arts Exhibition) for the first time.
