p7375
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a newly fired Bizen yohen sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in June 2024.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through daring kiln firings that embrace risk, the exterior features a deep, black ash-covered yohen reminiscent of wet charcoal, with some areas showing a subtle, shimmering silver ash glaze.

While the scarlet (hi-iro) of the Kaneshige school generally fades toward white the more intensely it is fired, this piece succeeds in retaining a rich, intense scarlet despite receiving a strong firing, having reached the perfect state of completion in a very limited area.

In contrast to the exterior, the interior (mikomi) has a more restrained ash coating, featuring an exquisite, circular patch of scarlet that mirrors the front of the piece.

Now over fifty years of age and having crafted thousands upon thousands of works, Koriki-sensei has recently begun to imbue his pieces with an exquisite allure born from subtle shifts in the clay; the craftsmanship of the base and foot of this work is nothing short of magnificent.

In an inscription by Yuho-sensei included in Koriki-sensei’s portfolio, there is a phrase that reads, "Will you end as an ordinary potter, or will you become a master?" I feel as though this piece teaches us exactly what it means to be a master.
Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before shipping).
Diameter 7.1cm × 6.8cm × Height 5.2cm
Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built a climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to establish his independence, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Molding Exhibition for the first time.
