p7390
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
These are new Bizen kiln-change sake cups, fresh from the kiln, by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense while having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in October of Reiwa 5 (2023).

True to Koriki’s style—bringing out the character of the clay through an aggressive firing process that fears no risk—this piece is a superb example that leans heavily into the "firing" aspect of the "firing and clay" synergy.

The thoroughly fired ash-covered kiln-change pattern features a layer of purple-silver luster atop an ink-like black, shimmering bewitchingly when held to the light and instantly captivating the viewer.

The interior rim is covered in the same rich gray ash-covered kiln-change as the exterior, which, combined with the deep perilla-red color in the bottom of the vessel, makes for a magnificent backdrop for sake.

The "nuke" (uncovered area) on the front reveals a hard, well-fired clay body, yet a faint perilla-red hue still emerges as if seeping from within the earth; this paradoxical expression, where the clay's character is accentuated by intense firing, is fascinating.

Now over fifty and having crafted tens of thousands of pieces, Koriki has been infusing his recent work with a sublime allure created by subtle movements in the clay, and the craftsmanship of the waist and foot of this piece is nothing short of masterful.

In a dedication written by Yuho Kaneshige included in Koriki’s artist biography, there is a phrase that asks, "Will you end as an ordinary artisan or become a master?" I feel as though this piece has taught me exactly what it means to be a master.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 6.7cm x 6.7cm x Height 5.9cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition for the first time.
