p7401
Bizen Titan Bokkee Shuten
This is a newly fired, giant Bizen "bokkee" (extraordinary) sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is a brand-new work, taken out of the kiln in June 2024.

A departure from his previous style, the form is so relaxed, mysterious, and unconventional—almost like something a child would create while playing with clay—that the moment I saw it, time seemed to stand still.

The clay used for this large sake cup is a relatively coarse mountain soil, and I was surprised to find that, despite its thickness, it is lighter than typical sake cups made from rice paddy clay.

The rim is left untouched, just as it was thrown on the wheel, with a refreshing simplicity, and the foot is designed without any artifice, with a thick foot ring seemingly pressed into the body of the cup.

Classified technically as *hidasuki* (fire-cord) firing, straw marks are visible across the piece, but the clay surface has completely absorbed the straw, making it look like a "fossil of straw."

This work was born from a state of total mental emptiness, simply playing with the clay, and much like the Fool in a tarot deck, it seems to suggest the beginning of a new journey.

Includes signed paulownia wood box (shōhō-zan style)
Diameter 8.8cm × 7.9cm × Height 6.3cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Art Exhibition for the first time.
