p7405
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen yohen sake cup, just taken out of the kiln by Yoshiteru Koriki, who pursues his own creative path without pretense while having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, fresh from the kiln in June 2024.

True to Koriki’s style of drawing out the expressions of the clay through daring kiln firings that fear no risk, the exterior features a deep black ash-covered yohen reminiscent of wet charcoal, with some areas faintly gleaming with a silvery ash-covered yohen.

While the scarlet of the Kaneshige school generally leans toward white as it is fired more intensely, this piece succeeded in retaining a rich, deep scarlet despite receiving a strong firing, as it was pulled from the kiln at the perfect moment for only a very limited area.

The interior landscape shows an even more intensely fired ash-covered aesthetic than the exterior, and the small circular "marunuke" (uncovered spot)—a hallmark of Koriki—is vibrant with a strong scarlet hue, making it truly spectacular.

Now over fifty and having crafted thousands upon thousands of works, Koriki has recently been imbuing his pieces with an exquisite allure through subtle movements in the clay, and the craftsmanship of the waist and foot of this piece is nothing short of masterful.

In the inscription by Yuho Kaneshige featured in Koriki’s artist profile, there is a phrase that asks, "Will you end as an ordinary person, or become a master?" It feels as though this piece teaches us exactly what it means to become a master.

There is a mark on the rim where a firing fusion was removed, but it does not affect use.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.3cm × 6.3cm × Height 5.7cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige for seven years starting in 1989.

In 1996, he built his own climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.
In 2000, he held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo and has continued to hold annual solo exhibitions since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Chanoyu Zokei-ten (Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition) for the first time.
