p7426
Giant Bizen Hidasuki sake cup
This is a new giant Bizen sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretension, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in June 2024.

A departure from his previous style, the incredibly relaxed and strangely bizarre form, reminiscent of a child’s clay creation, made time stand still the moment I laid eyes on it.

The clay used for this large sake cup is a relatively coarse mountain soil, and I was surprised to find it lighter than standard rice-paddy clay cups, despite its considerable thickness.

The rim is left entirely raw, with no refined shaping, and he has abandoned all artifice, even featuring a thick foot ring that sinks into the body of the vessel.

While technically classified as "hidasuki" (fire-cord) firing, with straw markings visible across the piece, the clay surface has completely consumed the straw, giving it the appearance of a "straw fossil."

Born from a state of total mental emptiness while playing with the clay, the piece seems to suggest the beginning of a new journey, much like the Fool in the Tarot.

Signed wooden box (Shiho-san type)
Diameter 7.2cm × 7.0cm × Height 6.0cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built a climbing kiln and established his independence in Shizutani, Bizen City, firing his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Ceramic Art Exhibition for the first time.
