p7428
Bizen Hidasuki Yunomi (Tea Cup)
This is a new Bizen "Hikidashi Kuro-Hidasuki" (pulled-out black scarlet-cord) teacup by Yoshiteru Kouriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This latest work was just taken out of the kiln in June 2024.

In addition to traditional Bizen techniques achieved through wood-firing in an anagama kiln, this teacup utilizes a new method developed since the 2000s.

By incorporating the "hikidashi" (pull-out) technique into the wood-firing process, the pieces are placed near the kiln's firebox and removed during firing to be rapidly cooled, carbonizing the surface.

What sets this piece apart from the black "hikidashi" works currently trending in Bizen is that it belongs to the "Hidasuki" (scarlet-cord) lineage.

While Hidasuki is typically characterized by a red cord pattern on soft-toned white clay, the carbonization process reverses this into a black-silver hue reminiscent of Aobizen (blue Bizen), resulting in a texture unlike anything seen before, resembling iron or charcoal.

The scarlet cord also inverts to black, shimmering with a black-silver luster true to the name "Kuro-Hidasuki" (Dark/Black Hidasuki). Following his "shu" (preserving) works of Hidasuki inherited from his mentor Sozan Kaneshige through electric kiln firing, and his "ha" (breaking away) works of polka-dot Hidasuki with creative firing methods, this piece fascinates the viewer as an entirely new "ri" (transcending) form of Hidasuki.
No box included (*a paulownia box can be crafted separately).
Diameter 8.5cm x 8.4cm x Height 9.5cm
Yoshiteru Kouriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years under Sozan and Yuho Kaneshige starting in 1989.

He became independent in 1996 after building his own anagama kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Chanoyu Zokei-ten (Tea Ceremony Ceramics Exhibition) for the first time.
