p7432
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen yohen sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in June 2024.

True to Koriki-sensei’s style of bringing out the character of the clay through daring kiln firing that fears no risk, this piece leans heavily toward the "firing" side of the "firing and clay" balance, resulting in an exquisite finish.

The thoroughly fired ash-covered yohen features a magnificent landscape that evokes the swirling flames of the kiln, with some parts showing a rich, lustrous sea cucumber glaze and others a dull, glowing ash coating.

The "nuke" (open area) on the front reveals a hard, fired clay texture, while the shaded areas display a rainbow-like metallic sheen, providing an intriguing accent to the yohen and clay character.

Now past fifty and having created tens of thousands of pieces, Koriki-sensei has recently begun to imbue his work with an exquisite allure through subtle movements in the clay, and the craftsmanship of the base and foot on this piece is nothing short of masterful.

In an inscription by Yuho-sensei that Koriki-sensei includes in his resume, there is a phrase: "Will you end as an ordinary person, or become a master?" I feel as though this piece teaches me exactly what it means to become a master.

There is slight instability due to the shape of the foot, but it does not affect its use.

Includes signed wooden box (shiho-zan).
Diameter 6.6cm × 6.3cm, Height 6.1cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built an anagama kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become independent, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000, and has held annual solo exhibitions ever since.

In 2002, he was selected for the Tea Ceremony Ceramic Exhibition for the first time.
