p7437
Ibe Shuten
This is a newly released Bizen sake cup (guinomi) by Kosuke Yashiro, who spent his years of apprenticeship dreaming of working with Bizen ware in Imbe, and finally fulfilled his long-held ambition of building his own kiln there.
This is a brand-new piece, freshly fired in July of Reiwa 6 (2024).

Having fallen in love with the works of the many potters who were born and passed away in Imbe, Yashiro-sensei’s Bizen ware is a direct, honest expression of his lifelong commitment to the craft.

This piece was fired in a newly designed, ultra-compact, fully subterranean anagama kiln, a challenging firing process that utilized no refractory materials other than for the ceiling.

It features a quintessential Bizen combination of elegant yellow goma (ash glaze) and shiso-iro (perilla-red hue), with the particularly smoky, unique texture of the shiso-iro adding great depth.

Beyond the comfortable feel in the hand derived from its classic 6cm diameter, the very soft texture resulting from the minimal use of refractory materials in the kiln firing makes this sake cup deceptively understated, yet profoundly satisfying to use.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style) included
Diameter 6.1cm × 6.0cm × Height 4.9cm

Kosuke Yashiro was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1979.

Around the year 2000, he began his training under various master potters and kilns in Imbe, Bizen City.

In September 2016, he built his own kiln in Imbe and became an independent artist.
