p7444
Bizen Sake Cup
Born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki,
Koichiro Isezaki is a potter who brings a fresh breeze to the world of Bizen ware with his exceptional sense and masterful modeling skills. This is a brand new Bizen sake cup (guinomi) that has just been removed from his kiln.

This is his latest work, removed from the kiln in September of Reiwa 6 (2024).

While making the most of the characteristics of Bizen clay, he skillfully incorporates essences from his roots, such as wood carving, to create a unique piece that is instantly recognizable as the work of Koichiro Isezaki.

The finish is as vibrant as a textbook example of wood-fired kiln (anagama) work, featuring a contrast between white and amber clay tones, accented with various kiln-transformation effects (yohen).

In particular, the rich *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings on the lower part of the piece trace clear, sharp lines, creating a dynamic landscape that is only possible with an anagama kiln.

The *tobigoma* (scattered sesame ash) that fell onto the interior has a superb color and matte texture; it looks as if the cup is longing for sake, much like the dry earth waits for the rainy season.

The form was created entirely by hand-molding rather than using a potter's wheel, and the meticulously detailed design exudes a dense presence, much like a tea bowl.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.6cm x 7.3cm x Height 6.0cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1974 as the eldest son of Jun Isezaki.

After graduating from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States.

Later, in 1998, he apprenticed under Jeff Shapiro, a potter living in New York City and a former student of his father.

After studying pottery for about two years, he returned to Japan, and in 2000, he became an independent potter under his father, Jun Isezaki.
