p7445
Bizen Yohen Blue Guinomi
Born in Imbe and having loved Bizen ware since childhood, Takashi Baba finds his life's joy in creating works and firing kilns. This is a newly fired "Yohen So" (Blue Kiln-Change) Guinomi (sake cup) fresh from his kiln.

This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in August 2024.

A piece from his "Yohen So" series, this cup represents an evolution of his signature black Bizen ware made with applied clay, featuring areas of the black surface transformed into a vibrant cobalt blue.

While the intense cobalt blue—from which the "Yohen So" series gets its name—is the most eye-catching feature, the other black sections also exhibit a unique, gunmetal-like finish, a result of intense firing.

The "nagare-goma" (flowing sesame glaze) that flowed toward the rim due to being fired upside down is truly fascinating. The calm, slightly greenish sesame glaze, a hallmark of Mr. Baba's kiln, has fallen just on the foot, creating a patchwork-like effect.

The modern spatula carving and split foot, characteristic of an artist who studied sculpture, are also intriguing, adding further depth and shadow to this black and blue creation.

With its vibrant blue, cool black, and modern form, this piece comes together in a trinity that is unforgettable once seen.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 7.0cm x 6.9cm x Height 5.6cm

Takashi Baba was born in 1983 as the eldest son of Bizen ware artist Shosuke Baba.

Thinking he would become a potter from a young age, he chose to study sculpture in university to broaden his artistic perspective.

After graduating from the Tokyo University of the Arts with a degree in sculpture in 2006, he underwent training at the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture.

He became independent in 2007 and held his first solo exhibition.

He is currently active mainly through solo exhibitions at department stores.
