p7450
Bizen sake cup
Born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki,
Koichiro Isezaki breathes fresh air into the world of Bizen ware with his extraordinary sense and skillful craftsmanship. This is a newly fired Bizen sake cup (guinomi) fresh from his kiln.

This latest work was just fired in September 2024.

While utilizing the characteristics of Bizen ware as an earthen material, he successfully incorporates essences from his roots in fields such as wood carving to create unique pieces that are instantly recognizable as Koichiro's work.

It features a brilliant finish that serves as a textbook example of an anagama (climbing kiln), with a base contrast of white and amber clay tones accented by a variety of kiln changes.

In particular, the rich *hidasuki* (fire-cord) markings on the lower part of the piece create distinct ridges, producing a sense of dynamism only possible through an anagama kiln.

The *tobigoma* (splashed ash) that has fallen into the interior has a wonderful color and matte texture, appearing as if the piece is waiting for sake just as the parched earth waits for the rainy season.

The entire body was formed by hand rather than on a potter's wheel, and the meticulously detailed design exudes a dense presence akin to a tea bowl.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.8cm × 7.2cm × Height 5.8cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1974 as the eldest son of Jun Isezaki.

After graduating from the sculpture department of Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States.

Later, in 1998, he studied under his father's apprentice, New York-based ceramic artist Jeff Shapiro.

After studying pottery for about two years, he returned to Japan and became an independent ceramic artist under his father, Jun Isezaki, in 2000.
