p7451
Ibe Shuten
This is a brand-new Bizen sake cup (guinomi) by Kosuke Yashiro, an artist who spent his formative years dreaming of working with Bizen ware in Imbe, and finally realized his long-held ambition of building his own kiln there.
This is a latest work, freshly fired in July of Reiwa 6 (2024).

This piece is a classic, straightforward Bizen ware, true to Yashiro-sensei, who fell in love with the works of the many potters who were born and passed away in Imbe, and dedicated his life to the craft.

This work was fired in a newly designed, ultra-compact, fully underground anagama (tunnel kiln), a challenging firing where no refractory materials were used except for the ceiling.

The primitive kiln effects, possible only because of this small kiln inspired by traditional earth kilns, feature a seamless blend of dry sesame glaze (kase-goma), ash-covered kiln effects, yellow sesame, and charred sesame textures.

This piece is almost entirely covered in ash, with the natural earth texture visible only on the foot, and its rich perilla-purple hue, punctuated by three small "nuke" (fire-marked patches), is deeply evocative.
Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 6.9cm x 6.4cm x Height 5.7cm
Kosuke Yashiro was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1979.

Around the year 2000, he began his apprenticeship under various kiln masters and artists in Imbe, Bizen City.

In September 2016, he built his own kiln in Imbe and became an independent artist.
