p7452
Bizen Yohen Sake Cup
Born as the eldest son of Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki, Koichiro Isezaki breathes new life into the world of Bizen ware with his exceptional sense and masterful shaping techniques. This is a newly fired Bizen yohen sake cup (guinomi) fresh from his kiln.
This is his latest work, just fired in September 2024.

While utilizing the inherent characteristics of Bizen earth, he skillfully incorporates essences from his roots—such as wood carving—to create unique works that are instantly recognizable as Koichiro's own.

This piece features a rare "kiln change" (yohen) produced near the side-firing hole in the middle section of an anagama kiln. Much like the changes seen in a climbing kiln, it displays a distinct contrast between red and black ash-covered yohen.

Compared to standard climbing kiln yohen, the variations in the landscape are even more vivid. Within a unique transformation that blends elements of sangiri (reduction firing) and yellow/charred sesame-like patterns, the scarlet hue that seems to glow from the very core of the clay is deeply impressive.

The "nuke" (uncovered areas) reveal about three different clay tones in response to subtle temperature differences, graduating from an orange-tinged earth tone around the highlights to a classic Bizen brown mixed with scarlet, and finally to a bright scarlet earth tone, allowing one to enjoy the colorful variations typical of an anagama kiln.

The form itself was shaped entirely by hand rather than on a potter's wheel, and the meticulously detailed design exudes a dense presence, much like a full-sized tea bowl.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.5cm x 7.3cm x Height 6.1cm

Koichiro Isezaki was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1974 as the eldest son of Jun Isezaki.

After graduating from the Sculpture Department of Tokyo Zokei University in 1994, he studied abroad in the United States.

Later, in 1998, he apprenticed under Jeff Shapiro, a potter living in New York City who had also been a student of his father.

After studying pottery for about two years, he returned to Japan, and in 2000, began his independent career as a potter under his father, Jun Isezaki.
