p7463
Ibe Shuten
This is a brand-new Bizen-yaki sake cup (guinomi) by artist Kosuke Yashiro, who spent his years as an apprentice dreaming of working with Bizen ware in Imbe, and finally realized his long-held ambition of building his own kiln there to make his debut.
This is his latest work, just fired in July 2024.

Having fallen in love with the works of the many potters who were born and passed away in Imbe, this piece is a straightforward expression of Bizen ware, true to Yashiro-sensei’s commitment to making it his life's work.

This piece was fired in a newly designed and built ultra-small, fully subterranean anagama (tunnel kiln), a challenging firing process that utilized no refractory materials other than for the ceiling.

The combination of elegant yellow sesame (kigoma) glaze and shiso (perilla) color is the very definition of Bizen ware, with the smoky, unique texture of the shiso color being particularly deep and flavorful.

In addition to the excellent feel in the hand derived from its classic 6cm diameter, the very soft texture resulting from a firing process that minimized the use of refractory materials creates a sake cup that is deceptively simple, yet offers a deeply profound experience with every use.

Signed wooden box (shihozan) included
Diameter 6.3cm x 6.2cm x Height 4.6cm

*Please note that a shipping fee of 800 yen will be automatically added at checkout.

Kosuke Yashiro was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, in 1979.

Around 2000, he began his apprenticeship under various kilns and artists in Imbe, Bizen City.

In September 2016, he built his own kiln in Imbe and became an independent artist.
