p7469
Bizen Hidasuki Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen hidasuki sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative path without pretension while having studied under the masters Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This piece was removed from the kiln in June 2024.

It is a deeply tasteful wood-fired hidasuki sake cup, carefully fired after being sealed in a saggar within a climbing kiln to prevent any natural ash glaze from adhering to it.

Unlike the conventional combination of mogusa clay and hidasuki fired in an electric kiln, this piece features a bluish-gray clay base, with some areas retaining a yellow-ochre tone as if the raw clay were left untouched. In contrast to the elegant and flamboyant mogusa hidasuki, this cup presents a rugged, earthy, and sophisticated landscape.

Furthermore, the hidasuki on this piece has a depth I have never seen before, appearing almost as intense as if it had been painted with bengara (iron oxide) red pigment dissolved in water.

The powerful, circular, and stately foot design suits the wild coloration of this work, and the somewhat primitive charm of the foot is truly captivating.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 7.2cm x 7.1cm x Height 5.3cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under the tutelage of Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built a climbing kiln in Shizutani, Bizen City, to become independent, and fired his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Chanoyu Zokei (Tea Art) Exhibition for the first time.
