p7471
Ibe Shuten
This is a new Bizen sake cup (guinomi) just out of the kiln by Kosuke Yashiro, who spent his formative years dreaming of working with Bizen ware in Imbe, and finally realized his long-held ambition of building his own kiln there.
This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in July 2024.

Captivated by the works of the many potters who were born in and passed away in Imbe, Mr. Yashiro has dedicated his life to Bizen ware, and this piece reflects his straightforward, earnest approach to the craft.

This work was fired in a newly designed and constructed ultra-small, fully subterranean anagama kiln, a challenging firing process that used no refractory materials except for the ceiling.

Inspired by traditional earthen kilns, this small anagama achieves a primitive yohen (kiln transformation) that could only be produced in such a structure, giving the quintessential Bizen haikaburi (ash-covered) yohen a fresh, new appearance.

While this piece is nearly entirely covered in ash, a faint yellowish clay tone is visible only on the front and the foot, which, combined with the unique ash-covered yohen that evokes the texture of shark skin, creates a singular landscape.

At first glance, the scenery might seem understated enough to be overlooked, but it is a piece that offers new discoveries the more it is used, such as the subtle yellow clay tone hidden in the interior.
Signed wooden box (shiho-san) included
Diameter 6.8cm × 6.5cm × Height 6.4cm

Kosuke Yashiro was born in Sapporo, Hokkaido in 1979.

Around 2000, he began his training under various kilns and artists in Imbe, Bizen City.

In September 2016, he built his own kiln in Imbe and became an independent artist.
