p7472
Bizen Hidash-dashi Sake Cup
This is a new Bizen "hikidashi" (drawn-out) sake cup by Yoshiteru Koriki, an artist who pursues his own creative vision without pretense, despite having studied under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.
This piece was fired and removed from the kiln in June 2024.

While "hikidashi" was not a technique previously seen in Koriki's Bizen works, he has evolved it into a unique aesthetic by drawing out high-quality clay.

Placed in the area of the kiln with the most intense fire, the piece was pulled from the kiln during the firing process, resulting in the entire surface being generously coated in a dark green natural glaze.

The nuances of color vary, with a stronger metallic sheen around the foot, making this a sake cup that allows one to rediscover the mystery of "hikidashi" black and the wonder of light.

Inside the cup, drips of natural glaze that fell from the kiln wall have adhered to the surface, creating a mysterious, pale blue hue reminiscent of Karatsu straw-ash glaze.

With the orthodox form characteristic of Koriki, this sake cup is approachable and highly functional, despite its extraordinary appearance.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.8cm × 6.7cm × Height 5.4cm

Yoshiteru Koriki was born in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, in 1970.

After graduating from high school, he studied ceramics for seven years starting in 1989 under Sozan Kaneshige and Yuho Kaneshige.

In 1996, he built a climbing kiln and went independent in Shizutani, Bizen City, firing his first kiln the following year.

He held his first solo exhibition in Tokyo in 2000 and has held solo exhibitions every year since.

In 2002, his work was selected for the Tea Ceremony Ceramic Art Exhibition for the first time.
