p7492
Kuroshuten
This is a brand new black sake cup (guinomi) fresh from the kiln by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who studied pottery under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and now pursues his research in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture.
This is his latest work, removed from the kiln in November 2024.

Mr. Oiwa aims for intense firing in his process; the high thermal energy transforms the applied clay slip into a brilliant black, resulting in a glossy, clear black finish similar to that of his mentor, Mr. Kakurezaki.

For this firing, he utilized high-temperature, short-duration techniques to target vivid blue kiln transformation (yohen), allowing flames to rush through the back of the kiln at peak temperatures to produce a striking, clear blue color.

The beautiful cobalt blue spreads fluidly from the rim down to the base, and it will surely shine even more beautifully when filled with sake.

The bold form, featuring extensive use of carved facets (shinogi), creates fine ridges and grooves in the clay surface, giving the vivid blue kiln transformation delicate depth through its contours.

The design, carved out from a block of clay like an Ayers Rock formation, is fascinating, and Mr. Oiwa's attention to detail is evident from the foot to the rim.

There is a small stone inclusion in the foot, making it slightly unstable. Please contact us if you would like to see a video demonstration.
Signed paulownia box to follow (we apologize, but please note that it will take some time before shipment.)
Diameter 7.8cm × 6.5cm × Height 6.8cm
Tomoyuki Oiwa was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture in 1977.

He completed his studies at the Bizen Pottery Center in 2004 and became an apprentice to Ryuichi Kakurezaki in 2005.

He established his own studio in Hyogo Prefecture in 2014.
