p7496
Bizen Ibe Sake Cup
This is a brand new Bizen Ibe sake cup fresh from the kiln by Mamoru Taku, a man acknowledged by himself and others as a clay enthusiast who continues his endless journey of research.

This latest work, fired in October 2024, is of the so-called "Ibe-te" style, featuring a surface coated with a different type of clay than that of the main body.

In loading the kiln, Taku-sensei carefully considered the flow of the fire during firing, positioning the sake cup so that the fire would rush over the upper part near the rim, while lingering around the lower body.

As a result, from the upper part to the body, as the natural glaze transitioned into burnt sesame ash, changes occurred in the Ibe-te clay coating, creating a pale, bluish kiln-change (ao-yohen).

From the body downwards, a mustard-colored yellow sesame ash combines with the lustrous black of the Ibe-te, successfully enhancing the tactile experience while creating a weathered surface texture.

Around the foot and lower base, the amount of applied clay was significantly reduced to allow the inherent properties of the raw clay body to emerge, allowing one to enjoy the foot in a manner similar to an exposed clay finish.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.5cm x 6.4cm x Height 4.9cm

Mamoru Taku was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1952.

He studied the fundamentals of pottery at the Bizen Pottery Center and refined his skills as an apprentice to Takaaki Kimura starting in 1980.

In 1983, he built an ascending kiln in the former Saeki-cho, Wake-gun, and launched his career as an independent artist with his first firing in November.

In 1998, he relocated his studio to Takebe-cho, where he built a semi-underground anagama kiln.

Specializing in the study of clay, he produces a wide range of works, including sake vessels, flower vases, and tea utensils, with a focus on his signature hidasuki (fire-cord) patterns.

He has been selected for numerous exhibitions, including the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the China International Ceramics Exhibition, the Asahi Ceramics Exhibition, and the Issuikai Ceramics Exhibition.
