p7499
Bizen sake bottle
This is a new Bizen tokkuri (sake flask) fresh from the kiln by Tomio Ochi, an artist who has spent his career working diligently under the guidance of Anjin Abe, pouring his insatiable artistic passion into his ceramics.

Reflecting Ochi-sensei’s preference for firing at high temperatures, this piece is remarkably hard-fired, solid, and substantial, exuding a sense of power as if the clay itself has been condensed into a high-density form.

At the same time, a close look at the fine nuances of the clay surface reveals a rich variety of shades within the brownish earthen tones, creating the deep, complex coloring characteristic of true Bizen ware.

From the rim to the shoulder, the piece features the heavy, flowing "goma" (ash glaze) characteristic of the Abe school, which serves as a stunning accent against the exquisitely smooth, lustrous surface of the clay.

Designed with an awareness of "three-point expansion"—creating three-dimensional form from a triangular base—the work achieves a brilliant harmony between aesthetic beauty and functional ease of use.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that it will take some time before the item can be shipped).
Rim 3.6cm x Body diameter 8.8cm x Body diameter 8.7cm x Height 14.3cm Capacity approx. 270cc

Tomio Ochi was born in Ehime Prefecture in 1949 and graduated from Ehime Prefectural Niihama Technical High School.

Starting in 1969, while working at a company, he studied painting and sculpture at Taka Bijutsu.

In 1976, he received instruction under Anjin Abe while serving as an assistant for kiln firings in Ehime Prefecture.

In 1998, he built his own kiln on the grounds of Anjin Abe’s studio in Ushimado, Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.

He approaches his Bizen ware creations by drawing on his background in sculpture and painting.
