p7502
Bizen ware teacup
This is a new Bizen tea cup fresh from the kiln by Mamoru Taku, a man universally recognized as a clay enthusiast who continues his endless journey of research.
This latest work, fired in October 2024, was created in a position where the flames rushed through to the back of the kiln.

Because it was fired in the path of the rushing flames, intense "kase-goma" (dry ash glaze) appears across the entire piece, and the way this ash penetrates not only the body but also from the rim into the interior is truly magnificent.

In contrast, the interior (mikomi) has a slow accumulation of fine natural glaze, with smooth yellow ash pooling at the bottom, topped by a layer of kase-goma.

The form, built using the coil technique to tighten the clay, is incredibly powerful, possessing a presence and dynamism reminiscent of an antique Bizen water jar.

The foot (kodai) is completely free of kiln transformation, appearing as if the raw clay is exposed; indeed, it is only upon inspecting the foot that one realizes the work possesses a marbled clay character.

No box included (*a paulownia box can be made upon request).
Diameter 9.1cm x 8.9cm x Height 7.7cm

Mamoru Taku was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1952.

He studied the fundamentals of pottery at the Bizen Ceramic Art Center, and from 1980, he refined his craft as an apprentice under Takaaki Kimura.

In 1983, he built a climbing kiln in what was then Saeki-cho, Wake-gun, and became an independent artist after his first firing in November.

In 1998, he relocated his studio to Takebe-cho and built a semi-underground anagama kiln.

Specializing in the study of clay, he creates a wide range of works, including sake vessels, vases, and tea utensils, with a focus on hi-dasuki (fire-cord) techniques.

He has been selected for numerous exhibitions, including the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition, the China International Ceramic Art Exhibition, the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, and the Issuikai Ceramic Art Exhibition.
