p7514
Ibe Tokkuri
This is a newly fired Ibe sake flask by Yuho Kaneshige, a potter who, while part of the distinguished Kaneshige family, has always continued to challenge himself as an individual craftsman.
This latest work was fired in November 2024 and was exhibited at his solo exhibition in December.

Created using a newly designed "tsuchigama" (all-earth kiln) that does not use firebricks, this work represents a fusion of the Kaneshige firing technique with this unique kiln.

With the Bizen region seeing much rain this autumn, the "mose" (humidity within the kiln) worked exceptionally well during this firing, resulting in many pieces that brilliantly combine rich ash-covered kiln-altered effects with vivid scarlet hues.

The neck of this piece, in particular, displays a unique scarlet hue caused by the mose that is unlike anything else; this red surface is distinct from the four "nuke" (clear areas) of scarlet, leaving an unforgettable impact upon the viewer.

The front "nuke" and the sides showcase the deep, flavorful scarlet characteristic of the finest quality "ta-tsuchi" (rice paddy clay). The combination of the ash-covered kiln alteration, the red surface from the mose, and the top-tier clay will surely lead any sake lover to paradise.

The color and texture of the ash-covered kiln-altered surface reflect the high quality expected of Yuho-sensei. The beautiful greyish skin, combined with meticulous finishing, creates an exquisite surface that feels so pleasant you will want to polish it with sake forever.

At first glance, it appears to be a sake flask with a simple, clean silhouette, but the entire piece is complexly ridged and uneven, as if it possesses muscle; as you begin to slowly roll it in your hands, it reveals an entirely different expression.

Signed wooden box to follow (please note that due to various circumstances, it will take approximately one month for the paulownia box to be completed)
Mouth diameter 3.5cm x Body diameter 9.6cm x 9.4cm x Height 12.0cm Capacity 350cc

Yuho Kaneshige was born as the third son of Intangible Cultural Property holder Sozan Kaneshige.

He learned pottery techniques under his father, Sozan Kaneshige, beginning in 1975.

He became independent in 1980 and held his first solo exhibition in Okayama.

Currently, he focuses on tea ceramics such as tea bowls, water jars, and flower vases, as well as tableware.

In his tea bowls, which he particularly enjoys creating, he emphasizes the interior structure (mikomi) and pursues a balance between ease of use and the exterior form.

He has received the Sanyo Shimbun Award at the Prefectural Exhibition, the Encouragement Award at the Exhibition of Tea Ceremony Ceramics, and the Tanko Biennale Encouragement Award, among others.

In 2002, he received the Japan Ceramic Society Award, and in 2018, the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Meritorious Award.

In 2019, he was designated as an Okayama Prefecture Specified Important Intangible Cultural Property holder.

He is also dedicated to his solo exhibitions, which are held at various locations both within and outside the prefecture.
