p7515
Bizen Hidasuki Sake Cup
This is a brand-new Bizen Hidasuki sake cup (guinomi) fresh from the kiln by Mamoru Taku, a self-confessed and peer-acknowledged clay enthusiast who continues his endless journey of research.
This latest work, fired in October 2024, is made by kneading together scraps produced during the creation of other pieces.

This complex "nerikomi" (marbled clay) technique is only possible for Taku-sensei, who utilizes a wide variety of clays depending on the type of vessel he is creating; here, about five different types of clay are layered to form a unique marble pattern.

Furthermore, this piece was formed perpendicular to the layered clay, which causes the marble pattern to appear as if it is stacked.

Thick rice straw is wrapped diagonally from the base to the rim, creating a powerful Hidasuki (fire-cord) mark that beautifully holds its own against the striking marble pattern.

Combined with a unique form that fits comfortably in the fingers and a perfect size, it has been crafted into an exceptionally easy-to-use sake cup.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 6.8cm × 6.7cm × Height 5.1cm

Mamoru Taku was born in Okayama Prefecture in 1952.

He studied the fundamentals of pottery at the Bizen Ceramic Center and honed his skills as an apprentice to Takaaki Kimura starting in 1980.

In 1983, he built his own climbing kiln in what was then Saeki-cho, Wake-gun, and launched his career as an independent artist with his first firing in November.

In 1998, he relocated his studio to Takebe-cho, where he built a semi-underground anagama kiln.

Specializing in the research of clay, he creates a wide range of works including sake vessels, flower vases, and tea utensils, with Hidasuki as his foundation.

He has been selected for numerous exhibitions, including the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition, the China International Ceramics Exhibition, the Asahi Ceramic Art Exhibition, and the Issuikai Ceramic Art Exhibition.
