p7518
Ibe Guinomi
This is a brand-new Ibe sake cup, freshly fired from the kiln by Mr. Yuho Kaneshige, an artist who continues to constantly question himself even while remaining within the Kaneshige lineage, and who creates works as an individual potter.

This is his latest work, just removed from the kiln in November 2024.

Created using a newly designed "tsuchigama" (earth kiln)—an anagama kiln made entirely of clay without the use of firebricks—this piece represents a fusion of the Kaneshige firing style with this unique kiln.

With abundant rainfall in the Bizen region this autumn, the "mose" (humidity within the kiln) worked exceptionally well during this firing, resulting in many pieces that beautifully feature both rich ash-covered kiln changes and vivid scarlet hues.

The "nuke" (clear patch) on the front and the "mikomi" (interior) reveal the deep, nuanced character of the high-quality "ta-tsuchi" (field clay) used, and despite the somewhat firm firing, the clay quality remains lively and vibrant rather than appearing dried out.

The hue and texture of the ash-covered kiln change are of the high quality characteristic of Mr. Yuho, and the beautiful grey surface, combined with meticulous finishing, creates a superb texture that makes you want to polish it with sake endlessly.

The texture is so soft and gentle against the fingers that if you were to touch it with your eyes closed, few people would realize it is an ash-covered kiln change.

The rim is thin and tapers inward, while the body from the waist to the foot is slightly thicker; this modeling balance—truly embodying the Sozan aesthetic—is crafted to the standard of a tea bowl, offering an outstanding feel in the hand.

Signed wooden box to follow (please excuse the delay; due to various circumstances, it will take approximately one month to complete the paulownia box).
Diameter 6.4cm × 6.2cm × Height 5.1cm

Mr. Yuho Kaneshige was born as the third son of the Intangible Cultural Property holder Mr. Sozan Kaneshige.

In 1975, he began learning pottery techniques under his father, Mr. Sozan Kaneshige.

He became independent in 1980 and held his first solo exhibition in Okayama.

He currently produces tableware, focusing primarily on tea ceramics such as tea bowls, water jars, and flower vases.

For his tea bowls in particular, he places great importance on the interior design (mikomi), pursuing a balance between usability and the exterior form.

He has received awards including the Sanyo Shimbun Prize at the Prefectural Exhibition, the Encouragement Award at the Tea Ceremony Modeling Exhibition, and the Tanko Biennale Encouragement Award.

In 2002, he received the Japan Ceramic Society Award, and in 2018, the Sanyo Shimbun Cultural Merit Award.

In 2019, he was certified as a holder of the Okayama Prefectural Designated Important Intangible Cultural Property.

He is also dedicated to his solo exhibitions, which are held at various locations both within and outside the prefecture.
