p7519
Drunkard
This is a *hikidashi* (drawn-out) sake cup by Masao Akitani, an artist who trained under the fifth Bizen ware Living National Treasure, Jun Isezaki, and creates works full of originality within a fresh aesthetic.
This piece was taken out of the kiln in June 2024.

The appeal of this piece lies in its mystical appearance, capturing the state of the interior of the ultra-high-temperature kiln—a place no human can enter—through the *hikidashi-guro* (drawn-out black) technique, which is a trademark of the Isezaki school.

Because the piece must be placed in front of the fire to be removed during firing, it is generously coated in natural glaze that covers the entire surface. This is then drawn out and rapidly cooled, resulting in a unique landscape of blended black, blue, and amber hues.

Vibrant cobalt blue, known as *aoyōhen* (blue kiln transformation), is particularly prominent at the base and rim, creating a stunning contrast with the black and dark green of the natural glaze.

In the interior of the cup, amber-like globs of natural glaze overlap with the gradation of the kiln transformation, allowing one to enjoy a mystical view of the sake as if peering into the cosmos.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san style)
Diameter 7.9cm × 7.9cm × Height 6.5cm

Masao Akitani was born in Saitama in 1968.

He studied under Living National Treasure Jun Isezaki starting in 1998, and after ten years of training, he built his own kiln in Bizen and became independent in 2008.

He held his first kiln opening in 2009.

He has been selected for the Tanabe Museum of Art’s "Forms of Tea Ceremony" exhibition and the Japan Kōgei Association Chugoku Branch exhibition, and has received awards including the Okayama Prefectural Art Exhibition Prize and the Encouragement Prize.
