p7543
Bizen sake cup
This is an earlier Bizen sake cup by Go Kaneshige, who continues his research and pottery making after moving his kiln from Ibe to Kugu.

Fired around 2003, this piece was created at his Ibe kiln.

It is a sake cup featuring "haikaburi" (ash-covered) yohen, a firing style that embodies the essence of Kaneshige Bizen.
The faint, luminous "namako-hada" (sea cucumber skin) glaze is both elegant and powerful, making it a piece one could gaze at endlessly.

The scarlet color in the "nuke" (uncovered) sections is the very hue of the final period of the Ibe kiln that is etched into my memory, with a soft, earthen quality tinged with orange—a trait inherited from his father, Michiaki Kaneshige—that is truly magnificent.

There are also slight traces of gold coloration on parts of the shading and the clay surface, adding even more depth to its beautiful texture.

Although it is an oval-shaped cup, it has warped into a gentle triangular form due to the heat, which serendipitously makes it fit perfectly in the palm of one's hand; it is a wonderful sake vessel that is a joy to both look at and use.

This is an unused item that was carefully stored after being purchased new.

Signed wooden box (shihozan) included
Diameter 7.8cm × 7.5cm × Height 3.5cm

Go Kaneshige was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1968 as the second son of Michiaki Kaneshige.

Raised in a family of potters—with Toyo Kaneshige as his grandfather, Michiaki Kaneshige as his father, and Sozan Kaneshige as his uncle—and having grown up in the pottery town of Ibe, he naturally aspired to become a Bizen ware artist.

He graduated from the Ashiya College of Art in 1988.

In 1992, after studying at the Atelier Hikosen Ceramics Research Institute, he returned to Ibe, where he honed his Bizen pottery skills within the Kaneshige school.

He has been active in the field, exhibiting at the Bizen Young Artists Exhibition in 1996 and the Kaneshige School Exhibition starting in 1999.

In recent years, he has moved his kiln from Ibe to Kugu to continue his work.
