p7551
Red wine drinker
This is a red sake cup by Tomoyuki Oiwa, who studied pottery techniques under Ryuichi Kakurezaki and now pursues his research in Kamigori, Hyogo Prefecture.

This piece was removed from the kiln in November 2024.

It belongs to a series that acts as a counterpart to his signature "Black" series, featuring a special clay slip applied and fired to achieve a salmon pink hue.

While the overall color is a subtle salmon pink that is not overly bright, areas touched by natural ash glaze have developed bright brownish-red kiln transformations.

Works fired in an anagama kiln often feature a base with a strong reddish clay texture, but the remarkably matte, uniform tone of this piece is unlike anything I have seen, making it quite intriguing.

His mentor, Ryuichi Kakurezaki, has explored the utility of various clays, and this piece can be said to represent one of the possibilities for clay utilization discovered through Mr. Oiwa's own unique methods.

The form, which incorporates and expresses his mentor's distinctive design style, is fascinating, and the way the foot is carved—as if cutting into the clay with a spatula—is truly captivating.

Signed wooden box (Shiho-san)
Diameter 7.8cm × 7.3cm × Height 6.0cm

Tomoyuki Oiwa was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture in 1977.

He completed his studies at the Bizen Pottery Center in 2004 and began his apprenticeship under Ryuichi Kakurezaki in 2005.

He established his own studio in Hyogo Prefecture in 2014.
