p7559
Ibe Cup
This is an Ibe sake cup (guinomi) by Iwao Kaneshige, an artist who was born and raised in the prestigious Kaneshige family and continues to fire the kilns passed down through generations from Tōyō and Dōmyō Kaneshige, all while diligently honing his craft.
This piece was fired in a kiln about four years ago.

Created in a Bizen climbing kiln—a tradition upheld and protected by Tōyō and Dōmyō Kaneshige—this work masterfully captures the astounding energy inherent in the clay, hidden beneath the quintessential, austere "hiekare" (withered and cold) aesthetic of Bizen ware.

The dry, crusty "kase-goma" glaze, resembling tree bark, is a hallmark of climbing kiln firing. Furthermore, parts of this piece have come into contact with glowing embers, creating a moist-looking "haikaburi" (ash-covered) kiln transformation.

True to Iwao’s philosophy of relying solely on the natural transformations that occur during firing, this piece exhibits a very natural "yōhen" (kiln change) that, in the best sense, leaves the outcome to the clay and fire.

Yet, the interior of the foot features a vivid scarlet hue like a ripened persimmon, offering an elegant color that one could gaze at forever.

The molding of the body and the design of the foot are all simple and unpretentious; much like the kiln changes, the forms are born naturally from the potter's touch. It appears very simple, yet it reflects his slow, steady progress along the most difficult path.

One can feel Iwao’s quiet but unwavering conviction: he does not care for external recognition, but simply wishes to create work that brings joy to others.

This is an unused piece, carefully stored since its purchase as new.

With signed wooden box (two-way slat box)
Diameter 7.3cm x 7.1cm x Height 5.1cm

Iwao Kaneshige was born in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, in 1965 as the eldest son of Dōmyō Kaneshige.

Born and raised in a family of Bizen ware potters and possessing a personal love for ceramics, he pursued the path of a potter.

He honed his skills under the guidance of the Kaneshige family, went independent in 1995, and held his first solo exhibition at a gallery in Okayama City.

He exhibited in the Kaneshige Family Exhibition in 1999 and 2001.

In 2007, he held a solo exhibition at the Tenmaya Okayama store.
