p7576
Bizen Sake Cup
This is a slightly earlier Bizen sake cup (guinomi) by Masashiro Aiga, an artist who creates works that are uncompromising and full of character.

This piece was created several years ago.

It allows you to enjoy the earthen colors and firing effects that can only be achieved by an artist like Mr. Aiga, who specializes in the firing process among the many Bizen ceramicists.

Rarely does the term "disregarding profitability" suit a piece so well at first glance; this is one of only two finished sake cups that survived his thorough firing process until they met his exacting standards.

While the rim is covered with a beautiful, thick yellow sesame glaze (kigo-ma), the most striking feature is the subtle tonal variation in the interior caused by repeated firings, which evokes the charm of antique Bizen. The incredible "moist yet dry" texture of the surface is truly captivating.

The surface, where natural ash glaze has been fired to its limit, resembles Irabo ware, with layers of mustard-colored sesame glaze built up over a pale, bluish-tinged natural glaze.

In terms of form, it features the very large, bold cup shape characteristic of Mr. Aiga, making it a piece that invites you to put aside formalities and enjoy your sake in a hearty, carefree way.

This is an unused item that has been carefully stored since its initial purchase.

Signed wooden box (shiho-san)
Diameter 10.2cm x 9.6cm x Height 4.1cm

Masashiro Aiga was born in Hiroshima Prefecture in 1972.

He graduated from the Okayama Prefectural Bizen Pottery Center in 1997.

In 2003, he built a fully underground anagama (tunnel kiln) in Sabo.

The following year, he built his second, semi-underground anagama and continues to dedicate himself to his craft.
